Well-Aged Twizzlers

About a year ago, I made an impulse purchase: a huge tub of Twizzlers. I am not sure what I thought I would do with so many of them, but I bought it anyways. I am not a big candy eater, so I gave them to all of my guests. Unfortunately, the total quantity in the tub hasn’t diminished much. The other thing was that they were really fresh when I purchased them. Which normally is a good quality in food. But Twizzlers that are fresh have the texture more of a gummy bear. They just didn’t taste that good to me. Well, a year has passed and I was having a sugar craving. I reach for the tub expecting my sugar needs to be met, but predict a sense of overall disappointment. To my surprise, the Twizzler was perfect. Finally, after a year of aging, they were the correct texture and consistency. Just like a bottle red, Twizzlers to get better with age.

Many Thanks to Lullabot!

Lullabot is a well-known Drupal house.  Not only are they talented, they are very generous too!  After seeing a beautiful picture of Dries Buytaert’s baby posing in a Lullabot onesie, I just had to get one for my sister (due in June).  Although she has no idea “what a Lullabot is”, she was very happy to receive a onesie with a “lullaby singing robot” on the front.  Thanks again to the Lullabot team for spreading the Love of Drupal to babies everywhere!

“Context” Disscussed at Drupalcon 2008

Drupalcon Boston 2008Moving from traditional CMSs to Drupal, we were faced with a challenge - where do pages/blocks “live”. In many other CMSs, the site is set up with a folder structure, so breadcrumbs and active navigation are obvious. However, in Drupal, everything lives at the top level. At my company, we solved this by looking at the url (which is aliased to reflect nesting), the content type or a taxonomy we created for “site section”. It isn’t a pretty solution, but it does work. Other considerations include the referring page. Supposedly, the challenge of “context” was discussed at many sessions last week and we aren’t the only company coming up with creative hacks to address it. The rumor is that version 7 will have built in solutions. I can’t wait!

The Evolution of a Career

They say that hindsight is 20/20. And it is true! If I look at the choices I made in high school, it is now apparent that I was destined for a career in Web Development. While picking my free electives, I exhausted all of the computer courses. AutoCad, Animation and Robotics. There were no “internet” courses as usage was not publicly adopted yet. I didn’t even have an email address. But, I was setting the groundwork for a lifetime of “work” that feels more like “play”.

When I first went to college, I was majoring in BioMedical Engineering. Like many students, as I discovered more about myself, my interests became more apparent and stronger. I then switched into a double major in Computer Science and Psychology hoping to create ergonomic/user-friendly technology devices.
